I use both ameritrade and waterhouse. Waterhouse is very slow and does not update your holdings during the day. I like ameritrade at $8. a trade but slow also.

You made some good points for Diego to consider. As does Waterhouse for you, so, too, does Schwab have an office where I live in case I ever have to run-down there. Schwab's telephone support is also something I like. A real winner for me is that Schwab has an office in London, something that is important to me because I spend blocks of time there.

I am not pushing Diego to Schwab or saying anything negative about Waterhouse. Rather, there are a number of considerations for a person to take into account in selecting an on-line broker besides the commission they charge. Waterhouse is a good choice for you, JDN, and Schwab is for me.

JDN,

Most of what you said is true. My main complaint with Waterhouse is that their online system does not handle heavy volume days like today very well. Besides being very slow it goes down a lot.
This has happened to me 3 times in the last 2 months costing me some money as I try buy (WCOM today) at what I think is the lowest price.
I did go to the phone and after waiting 30 minutes I was able to get WCOM at a higher price than I wanted to pay.
Another complaint I have is that on trades of $50,000 or more the trade goes into a pending state sometimes for up to 5-10 minutes before it has a chance to get executed.
I do all of my stock research myself therefore I am only interested in an online broker that executes my trades as fast as possible.
SmartMoney rated them #2 as a discount broker, but I think their online was in the middle of the pack somewhere.
I hope this helps. How about that EMC today!
Thanks to everyone for all your help.
