Its complementary.
Cisco wants to get the network pipe to your door. This article is more about the network hardware.
Sun wants to write the code (Jini) that will enable your appliances to transparently use the network. I think Jini is more aimed toward Local Networks, not the Internet, but I suppose it could be used on the internet also.
