CompUSA Shares Up 18% On Takeover Rumors
Dow Jones Newswires

DALLAS -- Shares in PC retailer CompUSA Inc. (CPU) closed up 18%, or $2.3125, to $14.9375 in heavy trading in a surge that analysts attributed to rumors the Dallas-based PC retailer may be a takeover target.

Analysts said the rumors identified Office Depot Inc. (ODP) and Staples Inc. (SPLS), two office supply stores, as potential acquirers.

The talk boosted trading volume to some 5.2 million shares, more than triple its average daily volume.

A CompUSA spokeswoman declined comment, saying the company doesn't comment on rumors nor stock price moves. Spokesmen for Staples and Office Depot could not be immediately reached.

Nationsbanc Montgomery Securities analyst Tom Courtney, while doubting the speculation, said the company's market cap is low relative to the company's revenue.

On Tuesday, CompUSA reported that same-store sales fell a larger-than-expected 4.7% for the quarter ended Dec. 26. The company has struggled with falling PC prices as low-cost machines have hurt sales and profit gains. It also said that falling PC prices meant that gross margins for the period would be as much as one percentage point below its previously expected 14% estimate.

The company is due to release earnings Feb. 3.
