Hi Pat,

A couple of comments on the cable announcements. First, the deal between AT&T and @Home is planned to carry IP traffic directly over AT&T's fiber links using DWDM, with no ATM or SONET gear involved. So it sounds like good news for Lucent (and maybe Nortel or Cienna or other DWDM suppliers to AT&T), but not for Newbridge. As an aside, did you know that AT&T is now the largest shareholder in ATHM (or will be when the TCI acquisition closes)? Does that start the wheels spinning about what else might be behind this announcement(I know how you like to put 2 and 2 together!)

Second, the Cisco announcement is part of the base strategy of why AT&T bought TCI to begin with, namely to use the cable network to provide telephony service to the masses, bypassing the RBOC's/ILEC's and their access charges. Cisco also announced a recent deal with ADC under which ADC is providing the CPE boxes which go on the side of the house for splitting the signal, powering the services to the home, etc. I don't think Cisco has any plans to sell to the consumer, but wants to partner with those who do to insure that their CPE devices all work with (and ideally only with) the Cisco equipment at the head-end. All IMHO, as usual.

Hope you had a great holiday-good to see our favorite Canadian going in the right direction, no?
