Bob,

I respect your opinions. I also have seen JDEC's 'Open Systems' implementation up close and very personal. If you had done so, you'd recant your statement about JDEC making strong moves in open systems.

It will be very interesting to see JDEC's reference list in 6 months on UNIX. Most of the clients that were on that list were in 'implementation' mode. We'll see how many are in full scale 'production' mode by mid-1999. Those that are still flailing around will be screaming LAWSUIT at JDEC because they needed to get all this working for Y2K and they are hopelessly behind, can't find competent UNIX/RDBMS JDEC resources and now are faced with radical changes to their business model and a huge IT bill (2-4x their budget) to try and get something to run by 1/1/2000. There is a reason that JDEC has so many job postings for open systems people. They need a ton and most of these resources are already allocated. You don't retrain AS400 people on UNIX overnight.

JDEC is NOT an open systems player. They ALSO are NOT viable over a wide area network. They have a UNIX implementation that is really only viable on HP and their database implementation on ORCL is pathetically bad. It makes SAP look competent on ORCL, which is hard to do.

We'll see how their sales numbers look on UNIX in about 6 months. This is turf that ORCL, SAP, PSFT and BAANF will not concede without much bloodshed.
