Fred, as I understand shorting:

1. You want to short a stock and your broker borrows shares from someone's account.

2. You sell the shares.

3. The new buyer expects the dividend.

4. The old owner still expects the dividend and doesn't know the shares have been purloined.

5. The short seller digs deep to pay the dividend to the original owner of record who still expects the dividend.
