Uncle,

Probably just coincidence. The paperwork to purchase options can often take days to process. The bigger news (or question, possibly), I think, would be why he acquired them now. The company has been in business for quite a few years, so it may have been that they were going to expire (10 year life?). On a more sinister level, maybe he's planning to sell them, although he probably would have made the purchase and sale simultaneously. I'm not sure I'd read too much into this, as patents also take a while to file, and I really think it's coincidence.
