With DC Networks You Can Throw Away the Reg Cell Phone

I'll take you back to school. Here's a quick lesson from class iDEN DC 101:

DC WORK EXAMPLE #1:

Local PC business hitches with Nextel. I have this great, Indian version of the local mom and pop computer business about 10 min from my home: The Computer Brain (www.computerbrain.com). It's a tribe of first generation brothers, cousins, uncles, kids etc. They excell in service. I like the idea of having experts right around the corner so I be with live people who can see, touch and feel through my problems. For us business/marketing types its like therapy. It's the Barbershop of the next millenium.

Well I have floated this idea to Big Al and Little - the two founding brothers - about using Nextel. Talked about networks, etc. etc. Four weeks later - very quietly with little fanfare - I was gratified to see Big Al and Little Al luggin around i600's. Three weeks later they were sporting belt-clipped i1000s.

So I follow up with the next seed. I love to talk in their accent. "Hey Little Al, why don't you come on one of the networks here in Chicago- the one I run or someone elses. I have hundreds of trading jockies that would love to be able to "zap" some PC service person for a quick answer to a problem. Instead of lugging in the PC or talking on the phone, getting interrupted with a secy or voicemail or being put on hold - STANDARD WITH ALL REGULAR PHONES - DC lets me get the FIX - the information I need - NOW!

I have discovered there are people in all walks of life who, when presented with the option - immediacy or latency - they will go with immediate service. The more money in the pockets the more they will pay for specialized service.

The other aspect is simply good people referring good people in all walks of life. I want my honest mechanic to be so busy he can't see straight. Perhaps he'll be able to hire more honest people who can continue to offer great service - just like Little Al and Big Al.

I'm not saying all this is going to happen overnight.

But DC is addictive. It's the killer app of digital wireless industry.

Like the internet to all companies worldwide, Nextel's DC follows the internet model WITHIN the network - for it ties/hook people and relationships together more tightly than the competition.

Other PCS carriers know this all too well. There is fear in the marketplace for the inroads Nextel is steadily making.

I think this stock is highly misunderstood. Nextel is a internet-like wireless networking play. It's viral. You see more and more of these phones on everyone everywhere.

Last night we were having dinner at Tavern On Rush downtown and I struck of a conversation with the bathroom man - you know the nice guys that charge $2 for a stick of gum. He noticed my i1000 and immediatly began talking about his poor quality PCS phone. In comes this mid-30's tall bootstrapping guy dressed all in black with an i1000 on his belt. I acknowledged this and we all looked at each other. This guy is part of family in the #1 demolition contractor in the Chicago area - they have 300 Nextel phones in Chicago alone. He raved about the quality, slapped a $50 down in the tray after he washed his hands. The bathroom guy pulled out the biggest wad of bills I've seen in years and gave him change, before asking me for my card, talking about his sons, grandchildren and who they've all done quite well for themselves and all have cellphones, etc.

While eating I get zapped from my non-profit folks who are building computer centers for battered women. They have 10 phones on my network and want to get more. The non-profit is growing like crazy since the day I was introduced to them months ago.

I have a guy with 30 years in the Humbolt Park area of Chicago who is Mr. Network - knows everyone, everywhere all the time. He's been trying to get a meeting with me for the past 2-3 weeks. Said he got burned by Primco and said he was sold a pile a crap. He ran for alderman a few times, etc.

Bottom line, like the internet - its the network stupid. The entire world is unbundling along entirely new dimensions where networks of people helping people control the power - NOT companies that think they own the trust of the people.

All companies are going to have to do whatever they can to acknowledge this power head on - humble themselves more as this revolution of freedom and energy sweeps the world.
