Unfortunately I cannot offer a useful opinion about WHERE the balance between a statistical-mechanics free market and an ideology-driven planned politicoeconomy lie. I detest intrusive government - and I fear for the integrity of the Bill of Rights, imho a wonderful document. But I equally detest dirty rivers and shorn jungles. A guiding idea - a mythos - needs to be established and embraced to provide a goal beyond the rugged, ultimately siegelike individualism of the Libertarian ideal taken to its limit. But the trap is to get slurped into "communitarian" social engineering. But this cannot be done when a large percentage of our populace flatly refuses the responsibility of getting/being educated enough to judge who wants what and why. Oy vey.
