Simple: a little common sense and long experience. When absolutely everyone believes the world is coming to an end and rushes out of equities, then you should be buying equities. Just exactly what else are you going to do as a small investor...buy bonds yielding near zero?

In early October corporate America was nearly being given away in the wake of the LTCM fiasco, the Asian crisis, etc. Yet I was doing business in downtown San Francisco and I didn't see people throwing themselves out of windows or hoarding ammunition.

Remember when I was pounding the table on BT? I was reading stories that trumpeted the imminent collapse of every major bank when I was snapping up the stock. I took a look at the very long history of the bank - it has survived panics, depressions, recessions, world wars and major scandals. The events of October were piddling in comparison.
