Tom,

With all due respect to the AMD longs, I really don't care if they report +.30 or -.10, I just want it to be a surprise and make the stock move one direction or the other. That's how option straddles and strangles work. (For what it's worth, I'd rather the stock pop than drop.)

Out of 20 analysts, the highest current estimate is 30 cents and the lowest is .06. I've seen whisper numbers between .17 and .24.

Tom,

"If the earning were going to be that good, AMD would have provided additional guidance to analysts."

Not necessarily. AMD went into its' quiet period, I think around Dec 14.

Hutchinson Technology reported 52 cents yesterday. The estimate was 17 cents. Where was the guidance to the analysts? (Answer: Nowhere.)

Moral of the Story: Sometimes earnings blow away estimates, and just surprise everyone.

I'm not saying that AMD will. Just that it can, and does, happen.
