Hi Sig Sig to TQ: IMO the whisper number affects the stock price for only a few days after earnings are announced. Important for a trader, irrelevant long term.

TQ to Sig: Let us say we can agree that missing earning numbers, making the earning number but missing what ever the Whisper Number, can cause the stock to be adversely affected for some time after the earnings announcement, and sometime before the next earnings number, that affect is less apparent or not a factor in our thinking. If we can agree on that, then the next thing I would entertain is to what degree is that stock affected by this. I take your word based on your work with it. I look at a number of things and in a reasonably methodical way. Unfortunately, the whisper number has always been a thorn in my side. I try to factor it in but it is difficult to treat it in a "vacuum". In other words because of the nature of the whisper thing to try to draw conclusions from that as a separate entity from the earnings number has only created more noise for me and breath no insights that I felt were valid for me, other than making a rather vague prediction on a what if basis, which produced bland and rather lifeless occurrences. Could not even begin to call that results! My thinking always was tied into the earnings number for my background checking. ( I would have included the whisper number if there were a decent way of determining its use as a foundation for further study). I would have as a matter for future reference included that number, if there were a chart that listed that whisper number.

Check out Chuzzwit's succinct and good treatment of the whisper number. He covers the gossip and rumor aspect of the whisper number and fleshes out our conversations on the subject. It clearly enable me to reflect on how imperfect by definition that number is understood.

Thanks for the URL but I can't access it . Do I have to be a paying member of MSN to use it? If so, in your opinion would you pay today if you had to make the decision again, subscribe? Inquiring mind…want to know QT :)
