Microsoft, Sun to Enter Mediation

Microsoft Corp. said it will comply with a federal court directive to enter mediation with Sun
Microsystems Inc. to resolve a Sun lawsuit over the Java computer language. Federal District
Judge Ronald Whyte late Wednesday sent the two companies to either a court magistrate or to a
mutually selected arbiter to end their long-running dispute. Late last year, Whyte issued a
preliminary injunction against Microsoft in the case and Judge ordered the software company to
change its version of Java to meet Sun's specifications. Microsoft has said it plans to file an appeal
to the ruling by mid January.
