Symbol Technologies to Demonstrate Wireless Solutions Powered by Cisco Systems at CES '99 January 11, 1999 LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE) Integrated Voice and Data Network Tied To High-Speed Internet Access by Cisco Systems, Inc. Symbol Technologies, Inc. today announced that it will demonstrate an integrated, wireless voice and data network for the home based on its Spectrum24(R) wireless local area network, using cable and DSL technology from Cisco Systems. The product demonstration will be featured in a home networking exhibit sponsored by Cisco Systems at CES '99. The wireless home demo will be comprised of Symbol's Spectrum24 wireless local area network products, the Cisco 675 DSL modem and the Cisco ubr904 cable modem. The Spectrum24 solution provides users with high-speed voice and data access to the Internet from anywhere in the home. Users can surf the Net or read their email from the comfort of their backyard lounge, while they send a report to a printer located in the basement. Using Symbol's wireless NetVision(R) voice-over-IP phones, multiple phone calls also can be made at the same time over the same network. "Utilizing a wireless local area network frees users from the constraints of a wired network and is a high-performance, cost-effective solution for accessing the Internet in the home," said Fred Heiman, executive vice president, Symbol Technologies. "Once high-speed access is brought into the home, it makes sense to distribute that capability to any location in or around the home, without tying the user to specific wired locations." "At CES, Cisco will demonstrate through its technology, and those from other companies like Symbol, that the consolidation of Internet, phone and TV service under a single Internet infrastructure is happening now," said Larry Lang, vice president, marketing, Cisco Systems. "Technologies such as DSL, cable and wireless technologies will enable the consumer to develop personal networks where everyone is connected to everything." Modem technology from Cisco Cisco products in the demo include the Cisco 675, a stand-alone, integrated router and modem that connects to the user's network via a fast Ethernet 10/100 Base-T port. The demo also features the Cisco universal broadband router 904 (uBR904) cable modem, a plug-and-play device that integrates a Cisco router with a two-way cable modem based on the industry-wide Data-Over-Cable System Interface Specification (DOCSIS) standard. About Spectrum24 Spectrum24 is a high-performance, wireless local area network conforming to the IEEE 802.11 specification and supporting a data rate of 1-2 Mbps. One access point, located with the ADSL or cable modem, can provide coverage over an area of more than 20,000 square feet. Adapter cards located in laptops, printers or hand-held computers provide access to the network, allowing devices to share all network services, including file sharing, printing, Internet access and telephony. Symbol Technologies Inc. is a global leader in mobile computing and communications systems with innovative customer solutions based on wireless local area networking for voice and data, application-specific mobile computing and bar code data capture.
