Frank, the question of whether or not Microsoft could compete with Sun in regards to Jini was discussed by Bill Joy in September at the NY Internet Expo. According to him you cannot rely upon setting up your entire house on a network that can crash. The point of having Jini is to minimize the involvement necessary to put peripherals on the network. As Joy commented, it takes him more time rebooting and reconfiguring his wifes pc at home than what he is doing at work. It would certainly be hell to come home to find out that X appliance is no longer responding or the home network has crashed. This does not make life easier if this is the result of such networking. A stable operating system is a requirement and Joy believes that NT 5 or 2000 cannot be stable. Sun is terming Jini -- plug and work, as opposed to Microsofts plug and play -- play at getting it to work.

Frank: well first they'll have to come up with an operating system that works so they can run all this stuff, they haven't yet. Nothing like the "blue screen of death" coming up and frying your toaster.
