Well, I'm not a religious scholar but. Women were declared equal as the Quran was being delivered to Mohammad by the Arch Angel of God. Infanticide of baby girls was commonly practiced by Arabs at the time. This was also declared a sin. Slavery, also common, was declared illegal at the same time. It made no sense to the Arabs who were tough nomadic desert dwellers. Much criticism came on an already very persecuted small group of Muslims at the time as a result. Inspite of that equality and equal rights were declared.

Its a gigantic subject, extremely misrepresented in western media. If you want references let me know.
