Thoughts on Compaq storage moves.....

1. The SuperThingies are on less expensive boxes. As of yesterday, if you checked direct sales on Compaq's site you would see that higher end machines are being configured without additional storage..... but....if you click on the box to see what the options are, there is ONLY ONE.....ZIP!!!!

2. As the price of computers is driven relentlessly down, it becomes really, really hard for box makers to make a dime. If you want to know how tightly Compaq is squeezed, note that their mid-range Presarios that were shipping with 128 megs are now shipping with 96 and 64 megs (the price of memory is heading back up and forcing box makers to adjust).

Looks like the 'Super' is being 'given away'. And, although ZIP has disappeared from Compaq TV ads, I see no big push to identify Compaq with the inferior product.

Agree that Compaq is blundering here but they think they will profit by offering some kind of added value in a cut throat sector of the market.
