mile,
one reason to produce rdram is demand. the forecast demand is for 200 million plus in 99, way above forecast production. second reason rdram is more profitable. third these guys have each invested a fortune in new equipment to produce rdram, they need a return on that money.

Mile,

I was thinking the exact same thing. As a matter of fact reed the annual report, the same thing is mentioned. RMBS looks very tired here. With all the NAZ lunacy going on right now, RMBS drifts lower on week interest.

Mile: One thought as I've read about the alleged Samsung moratorium on taking orders is that they are gearing up for RDRAM and as such are limiting conventional SDRAM orders. It just doesn't make sense to me (given what I've read about DRAM supply / demand in the past 12 mos.) to consider that they are suddenly out of capacity. Either this info is just rumor, or if factual, then they (Samsung) are NOT bringing their idled capacity back on line. If so, then we are left with 2 possibilities re. the motives:

1. They are determined to limit supply to boost prices. Unlikely that they would do this unilaterally, and of course if they did it in synch with others, the US feds would be all over the industry (ie. collusion and price fixing).

2. They are retooling to some new standard. This could simply be die shrinkage to 0.18 micron or change of architecture to 128 megabit chips, or it could be another change in design, re: RMBS. Or maybe a combination of 2 or all 3 of these retooling variables.

Food for thought.... Back to the supine position for now...

Mile,

With today's action, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if we dip back into the 90's.

MIlehigh,

re: I do not want to see management say that "due to current capacity constraints, RDRAM will be delayed until more capacity comes on line"

I belive you have hit on something we should all watch.
