Story posted 11 a.m. EST/8 a.m., PST, 1/8/99 FREMONT, Calif. -- ESS Technology Inc. today launched the ES4280 chip set for its Internet set-top-box solution. This new solution allows consumers to download and playback MP3 format music from the Internet, in addition to other Internet functions, such as web browsing, e-mail and e-commerce applications. The ES4280 is also designed to playback MP3 format music stored on CDs, which are becoming very popular in Asia. "The MP3 compression format is becoming the most popular music format used in Internet applications and has become the de facto standard in the digital distribution of music.," said Johnston Chen, vice president of consumer products at ESS. The ES4280 solution addresses this application and is part of our Internet and consumer appliance roadmap." Samples will be available at the end of this month.
