The security code issue is something I have noticed for copywritten material such as music and may be an answer to recording industry's headache. Perhaps it could also be applied as unique identification/authentication similar to that used in Smart Cards in case you wished to do some electronic banking on your cell phone while out on your yacht. The article reference mentions GPS maps which are also copywritten. The applications seem limitless.
