M2 PRESSWIRE-8 January 1999-LACIE: LaCie announces storage peripherals for Macintosh systems
based on industry-standard FireWire technology (C)1994-99 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

* LaCie affirms commitment to FireWire with Hard Drive, CD-RW, and DVD-RAM storage solutions

* Shipments to start in March 1999

Macworld, San Francisco -- LaCie today announced three FireWire storage peripherals for the latest
Macintosh computers at Macworld Expo in San Francisco. The new storage products include a hard drive,
CD-RW and DVD-RAM drives.

FireWire was invented by Apple in the early 1990s and was adopted by the IEEE as a standard (IEEE
1394) in 1995. In addition to cross-platform adoption by Microsoft and Intel, the FireWire standard is being
chosen for an ever increasing array of consumer multimedia devices like set-top boxes, digital VCRs,
DVD players and even upcoming digital TVs. The technology supplies data transmission rates of up to
400 megabit/s and is expandable with up to 63 devices on a single bus. With FireWire, multiple
computers can even attach to the same FireWire bus and share peripherals in a small workgroup setting.
LaCie's announcement underscores that FireWire is rapidly gaining acceptance as the de facto
industry-standard for connecting personal computers to high-speed peripherals such as printers, scanners
and disk drives. "FireWire is poised to be the next big thing for storage peripherals, simply because the
technology is HOT for content creation professionals", said Philippe Sprunch, President of LaCie. "Our
customers need fast and uncomplicated solutions that allow them to focus their creative efforts on the
job."

"FireWire brings a whole new level of ease-of-use to connecting hard drives to the Macintosh" said Mick
Mountz, Apple Power Mac G3 and FireWire Product Manager. "We're pleased to see storage product
leaders like LaCie create exciting new products that fulfil these needs, while demonstrating that FireWire
is entering the mainstream."

During Macworld, LaCie is showing hard drive, CD-RW, and DVD-RAM products compatible with Apple's
latest Macintosh computers with FireWire interfaces. LaCie adds these products to a complete range of
SCSI and USB storage peripherals for Macintosh and other desktop computers. The LaCie FireWire
peripherals are expected to ship in March 1999. Users will be able to connect these new peripherals to
the native FireWire ports standard on newer Macintosh systems.
