Broadcom Details Set-Top Silicon Strategy

Digital cable chip supplier Broadcom Corp. outlined its OpenCable set-top silicon strategy at the Western Show. The company's new BCM93714 OpenCable reference design is a four-chip, dual-tuner solution. It includes the BCM3120 set-top transceiver (an integrated 64/256 QAM receiver, QPSK out-of-band receiver, and QPSK/16QAM transmitter with on-board analog-to-digital conversion), BCM3300 (a single-chip cable modem with proposed DOCSIS 1.1 functionality), BCM7014 (an advanced 2D/3D graphics chip), and BCM7010 (a MPEG-2 video and AC3 audio decoder). Samples of the chips are available today with volume production scheduled to begin in Q1 1999. In 100,000-unit quantities, Broadcom's four-chip solution costs $114.
