Cisco CEO: Internet-Related Stks' Values Indicate Potential

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The high valuations of Internet-related issues are indicative of the amount of potential the Internet, as an industry, has, according to Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) Chief Executive John Chambers.

"The market realizes that those companies who win in this industry are going to be the next Wal-Marts, the next generation of new Internet-type of companies," Chambers said in an interview
with CNBC Friday.

Yet, Chambers cautioned, investors must understand that while some companies will come out on top, there will also be those that fall to the bottom.

He suggests that investors look for Internet-related issues that have a "sustainable competitive advantage, that have a management team that can take them to the next level and to fulfill the expectations the market is putting on them."

Chambers has no doubts that Cisco will be able to remain on top. He said the company will make 10 to 12 acquisitions a year in order to enter new market niches and keep up with the rapidly evolving market.

He added that Cisco isn't interested in acquiring competitor Cabletron Systems Inc. (CS), which is rumored to be up for sale.

"I think our products overlap too much for that to be a logical move for us, but I have nothing but good things to say about them," Chambers said.
