EB:

...on the belief that telcos, if they want to survive, will have no choice but to invest heavily in technology that will allow them to compete head to head with cable, if they don't they are dead.

This ought to get BEL off their butts and busy installing Infospeed in Western PA:

if telco's were not feeling the heat, they wouldn't be doing anything, but now that the cable compaines may start eating there lunch, they are being forced into action.

EB,
This is what I used to think, but now I am not so sure. Now I think that the Huge Tellcos always had the upper hand and are dragging out the slow ADSL rollouts to see if the Cable modems will really take off or not. If it does, don't you think that the Tellco's would start buying out the Cable companies,....like AT&T bought TCI. If I were the Tellco's I would be worried as hell about the Cable companies and would roll out ADSL as fast as possible, even if it was only CAP.
I just don't see the hard push from the Tellco's,....as if they are not worried at all, because they have a grander plan,....buy out.
All in my own opinion
