"currency stability" is as valid concept as Market stability..unless
of course universal currency is used...I know you know only one such currency was ever in existence...:0

Thai monk raises gold, cash for national
coffers
04:32 a.m. Jan 08, 1999 Eastern

BANGKOK, Jan 8 (Reuters) - A revered Buddhist
monk has collected 725 kg of gold ornaments and
1.14 billion baht in cash from devotees to help the
cash-strapped Thai government, his spokesman said
on Friday.

Pra Maha Bau Yanasampanno expected the gold
donated at his Watpha Baantad temple in
northeastern Udon Thani province to reach one tonne
by the first anniversary of the programme in April, the
spokesman told Reuters.

''We hope that by April, when the project becomes
one year old, the collection would reach the target of
one tonne of gold,'' said the spokesman, a monk from
the temple.

A temple statement said of the total raised, Pra Maha
Bau had already deposited $1,278,000 in U.S. notes
in Thailand's account with the New York Federal
Reserve Bank, and had deposited 400 kg of gold
with the central Bank Of Thailand in July 1998.

His temple still possessed $2,998,971 in U.S. notes
and 718.99 million in baht, it said.

''The second handing over will take place in April to
mark the one-year anniversary of the project, and by
then I hope that (we) would meet the one tonne gold
target,'' the spokesman said.

The additional 325 kg of gold collected since July
1998 would be melted into bars for deposit in the
central bank's vaults, he said. The cash in U.S. dollars
would also be deposited with the bank in New York.

The spokesman said the donated dollars and the gold
would be given to the government for inclusion in
national reserves.

''But cash received in baht currency will be used by
the temple for social welfare schemes to help people
who have lost their jobs because of the economic
crisis,'' he said.

The temple committee was studying several proposals
on how to help the jobless, he added.

Pra Maha Bau has said his project has no time limit
and would continue until Thailand's economic crisis,
its worst in decades, was over.
