Sam, I'm so glad you responded so quickly. Let me elaborate on my experience with Border's and why I took a moderately aggressive long position a few days ago. I love to hang out in the Border's near Buffalo. I also like to use Amazon, sometimes to order when it makes sense and sometimes when I just need to search for a book that I can get after work at Border's. Having both of them is just what I need! Border's has a very friendly, hip staff that has really helped me a lot in finding new music that I never would have discovered on my own. They also never have enough checkout people! I always check out before heading over to the cafe for a cappucino because I want to enjoy the drink, not stand in line with it. Wouldn't it be a wonderful improvement to enable self-checkout? They already use considerable anti-theft measures and have virtually engineered out the need for people to attend to cash registers. I watch people checking out, I'd say 90% of the transactions are on plastic cards. Take Amazon's online model and merge with Border's unique experience - the pairing makes so much sense. Barnes & Noble, Media Play, Waldenbooks just don't have the same feel as a Border's. Another thing - over 50% of my gift-giving this Christmas was in Border's gift cards. I just went and got a bunch of 50's. Everyone loved them - why should I waste my time trying to guess what someone wants? My family feels like kids in a candy store with a Border's card to play with. Amazon better sieze the opportunity now. I hope they realize it's with Border's, of course; they've both got the same unique attitude that make the competition seem a little antiquated and stodgy. Border's is a well-managed company, Amazon is becoming like the AOL of online ordering. I hope others here could pitch in with their thoughts. Regards, Dave
