Fred & Intel Investors - Intel's New Mobile Processor Launch is set for January 25, 1999.

Dixon (256K L2 cache on chip) looks like a real winner but the mobile Celeron looks less promising.

Intel set to unleash barrage of mobile chips

Intel will announce on Jan. 25 two mobile Pentium II processors and three mobile Celeron processors, all of which will arrive just one week after the introduction of a new mobile 300-MHz Pentium processor.

The addition of six mobile processors in a two-week time span may have IT managers more puzzled than pleased with the number of choices.

"IT managers are going to have to step up and buy smarter," said Gerry Purdy, president of Mobile Insights, in Mountain View, Calif. "Intel is offering a family of products for users with different needs, and IT is going to have more of a challenge."

The Pentium II mobile chips, code-named Dixon, will come in 333-MHz and 366-MHz versions.

Although a small increase in processor performance may not be enough for corporate buyers to re-evaluate current purchasing strategies, system vendors will be using the chip refresh as a pretext to incorporate additional features into their notebook systems.

According to sources familiar with IBM product plans, the ThinkPad 600E and 770Z will include the Pentium II 366-MHz chip, AGP 2X for faster graphics, larger hard drives (to 6.4GB for the 600E), and Super XGA quality displays in 13.3 inches and 14.1 inches, respectively.

Digital video disc (DVD) will become standard on more ThinkPad models, according to an IBM source.

"DVD is becoming the solitaire of the advanced portable generation," Purdy said.

Micron will also be incorporating hardware-based DVD into its new models slated for the end of the month. But according to one Micron product manager, DVD has more value than just creating a new class of mobile moviegoers.

"Corporate filmmakers are using DVD for videos being developed for presentations," said Ken Knotts, a Micron product manager.

A DVD hardware implementation uses about 40 percent less CPU cycles than software implementations, Knotts added.

Micron will also introduce a removable primary hard drive in the TransPort Trek II this month.

Dell will refresh its Latitude line by offering DVD drives as an option for the first time, according to sources.

Compaq and NEC will have new models using Dixon, according to sources. NEC models with a 333-MHz chip will start at about $3,400, sources said.

Although the Dixon chip appears to be garnering unquestioned vendor support, the same cannot be said of the forthcoming mobile Celeron chip. IBM, Dell, and Micron will not offer Celeron-based mobile systems upon introduction, according to sources.

Intel's pricing of the chip is not expected to result in sub-$1,000 notebooks.

Sources said Hewlett-Packard will offer a Celeron-based notebook for about $1,500. NEC's model will be priced at about $2,000.

Mobile Celerons will be offered in speeds of 266 MHz, 300 MHz, and 333 MHz.
