Neal - Re: " On the topic of hidden value, how will INTC's sale if its Inktomi stock affect earnings? Was the gain large enough to add even a penny to earnings?"

The sale came near the end of December.

It should be reflected as a one-time earnings gain, separate from operating income, in the Q498 earnings report due next Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999.

Intel recorded SALES of Inktomi shares totalling about $33.9 Million and SALES of C|NET shares totalling about $11.9 Million, for a combined total of about $45.8 Million.

Assuming 1.753 Billion (Diluted) shares outstanding, this would add 2.6 cents to Intel's earnings, IGNORING THE ORIGINAL COST OF THE STOCK.

That money could have been used to BUY BACK Intel shares, making the actual EPS slightly higher by reducing the number of Intel shares by approximately 415,000 (assuming a $110 purchase price).
