I must say Im really surprised that Dell people dont understand why Amzn is priced where it is. Not that Im defending it of course, but Amzn is an infrastructure play just like Dell was. There were always those here (Gary, etc) that didnt buy Dell because they were looking for the value proposition in the end product, which doesnt exist. Dells manufacturing and distribution drove the company and Amazon is looking like the same animal.

AMZN, as of 09/30/98, reported hard of assets of about $40 million, and the spend about $40 million annually on 'product development'.

This is chump change to the large retailers. And the low cost to enter the business will attract newcomers.

Amazon spent 40 million/yr on R&D - ok, lets see some other company, brick and mortar, spend 40 million/yr and do the same thing that Amazon has done - I dare ya.

Again, Im not trying to justify Amazons current multiple but for the Dell thread to seem so perplexed by this phenom is amazing to me.

Exactly! Now watch what the big boy (girl?) does! Watch BKS ... I find it fascinating that they shored up their infrastructure with the purchase of Ingram.
