I believe cable modems will win the consumer market for broadband access while ADSL may still win the business market. Hal, I used to think so too but, if the Cable modem companies price the business sector as aggressive as the consumer market then many small business may go for the cheaper price. And the performance issue with Cable modems is not as bad as you might think. In many cases the bottle neck is in the Networks Backbone itself, and many hits at the Web sight you are trying to access. This "guaranteed bit rate" that the ADSL people want you to believe will get you faster through put is misleading. I have had personal experience in working at two different companies that have T1 access to the Web. I knew that I was sharing the bandwidth inside the company with other co-workers during the day so I would sometimes stay late at night when everyone was gone to see if this would speed access times surfing the Web. Guess what,...it was just as slow as during the day, and sometimes even slower, my guess is that after dinner people started surfing more intensely at home. The only time I heard from other co-works you could get real fast access times were early in the morning, around 5:00am,....too early for me to get to work. And T1 is very similar to ADSL in that you have a constant bit rate. Ask your self this,.....If you were a small business owner, and wanted faster than 56K but not the price of T1, and ADSL cost a lot more than Cable modem service, or ADSL service was not available what would you do? Sorry for all the negative posts, but I feel like a fool for going down the ADSL path that seems to be plagued with delay after delay.
