ArtAlley--What a great thread idea.
I have fished all over the world. I just about strictly fly fish as it is my favorite technique. Probably the most impressive fish I have ever gone after is tarpon. On a fly rod they are simply the best.

ArtAlley--I had a tarpon pull me over 1/2 mile once.
It was a 120 pounder and pulled my guide, best friend and me on an 18 ft. skiff. I was using 20 lb. test and a fly rod. The strength of those fish is beyond belief. Took me an hour to bring to the boat where the guide released it. I was pretty much as close to whipped as the fish was. We were right off Key West.
My guide told me the worst 'self hooking' story I have ever heard too. One of his friends was guiding a Frenchman who stripped down to a bikini swim suit. He wasn't nearly as skilled with a fly rod as he should have been to be dressed like that. He sank a 3/0 hook well past the barb, right in the end of an extremely vulnerable area of his anatomy. I guess the guide tried radioing to try to get someone to remove the hook only to get the reply: "Take him to the hospital, now!" The nurses there supposedly thought it was really funny, though every male I have told the story to curls up in a fetal ball.

Art,

Have you ever been down to Starved Rock for the saugar run? It's about time for it.
