Announcements that clearly point out the directions in which this work is moving excited interest at such events as the 59th academic lecture meeting for the Japan Society of Applied Physics and ISOM '98, an international symposium on optical memory. But companies are not content to rest on their successes regarding existing optical disk technologies.
