I think banks are coming on board quickly. At least my bank Michigan National Bank was fast enough to implement online banking. This happened pretty fast (may be due to demand, cost cutting measures, competition or combination of all), although they are not known to have on the cutting edge. They always seemed to lag behind NBD (now Bank One) and Comerica.
Therefore my conclusion is that banks don't have choice but to join online banking sooner than later.

PS: they are charging only $5.95 for unlimited transactions
