I think it is important to separate "Net veterans" from those that are just getting their feet wet. AOL provides a nice, user friendly way to get the masses to the Internet. I have never used AOL, and don't really plan to, however, my parents and their generation are just getting online now and that is where the subscription base will grow from - the novice sector that needs hand holding.

AOL will be OK in that regard - and there will be strategic alliances with a cable company(ies)... There is way too much capitalization for that not to happen.
