IBM Sold AT&T the IBM staff and the 'lines' or 'on-line ramps' to get their paying customers 'on-line'. That was it. AT&T is better at managing it anyway. It is not IBM's Core Business.

Now this rumor is interesting as MSFT has a 'community' like AOL, although only a few million use it. If AT&T just bought the 'on-ramps' WORLD WIDE....more than anyone including AOL by the way...this rumor would probably come true only if MSFT and AT&T jointly came out with a proposal to operate MSN world-wide with the new customer base from AT&T.

They would instantly become the leader. Yes AOL would have more users today, but with AT&T backing up the technology, they would have a great change at future hardware capability. Plus AT&T already has connection to every other major BellCo in all other countries...and these BellCos have the customer already...so who do you think they will join? A third party ISP or the phone company ISP?
