With MD's permission, cops push marijuana

Police supply asthmatic from Morocco with pot

By Anat Cygielman, Ha'aretz Correspondent

An elderly man suffering from asthma has been receiving a
monthly dose of marijuana from the police for six years,
with special permission of the Health Ministry. The ministry
is now forming a committee to consider other individual
requests to use marijuana for medical purposes, but no
change in the general policy toward marijuana use is
planned.

The man was accustomed to smoking raw cannabis
(marijuana or hashish) for medical purposes in his native
country (apparently Iran) and continued to grow the plant in
Israel for his own use. After repeated arrests for possession
of the illicit drug in Israel, the police referred the case to
the Health Ministry. The ministry's director general used his
special authority to grant official permission for the man to
use the drug.

Every month the man reports to the police to receive a
month's worth of marijuana supplied by the police from
drugs confiscated in arrests. In at least one instance, the
man returned during the course of the month to exchange
the marijuana he received for better quality pot.

Researchers have found that the active material in cannabis
expands the bronchi of the lungs, relieving asthma
symptoms. But the use of cannabis for asthma treatment is
limited since smoking may also trigger asthma attacks.

Hi Sam -- you'll be happy to know that Alrex has done a lot better so far during the off-season months than expected, according to a talk I had with management in late December.
