Hi penni,

How are you!

I have just looked in on the thread of this discussion. There is a lot of discussion of the collective good vs the individual good, which is basically an old and worn out conflict, but where is the mention of the experience of community, that dynamic state which is dependent on, strengthened by, and made effective by the encouragement of individuality?

An important characteristic of community is its depth of resources, a result of the nurturing and encouragement of individuality. Thus, whether it be an instance of family meeting challenges, or one of some other group of individuals doing so, solutions appear quickly and effectively.

Truth seldom is pleasant; it is almost invariably
bitter.

A loss of courage may be the most striking feature
which an outside observer notices in the West in our
days...

Such a decline in courage is particularly noticeable
among the ruling groups and the intellectual elite,
causing an impression of loss of courage by the
entire society. Of course, there are many
courageous individuals, but they have no
determining influence on public life.

Penni,

Collectivism and freedom do not mix. Wasn't it Barry Goldwater who once said something like, "There is no extremism in the defense of liberty."?
