Aiwa(C-Cube customer) intros portable DVD player................twice.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS FROM CES: Aiwa Plans Portable DVD, TV/VCR Market Entries With Lines In 1999 - -January 9, 1999 By Joseph Palenchar Aiwa announced plans to enter the portable DVD market and re-enter the TV/VCR combi market. The plans are part of a growing home theater focus that will include the company's first two Dolby Digital-equipped shelf systems and its first receiver-based Dolby Digital-in-a-box system. The portable DVD, shown in mockup form, will feature a 5.8-inch 16:9 LCD screen when it ships in the late second quarter or early third quarter, marketer Scott Wellington said. Pricing was unavailable. Aiwa will also ship its second home DVD player, this one a full-component-size unit that replaces a minisize model introduced last year. Two TV/VCR combis are due in June in 13- and 20-inch screen sizes. Both will incorporate hi-fi VCRs and a silver finish to match select surround-equipped Aiwa shelf systems. The 13-inch model is priced at a suggested $400 and expected everyday $299. The 20-inch model will ship at a suggested $500. In other Aiwa announcements, the company expanded its selection of shelf systems equipped with powered subwoofers to eight from two, and it announced pricing on its first headphone MD portables in several years. A play-only model is priced at a suggested $250, and a play/record portable retails for a suggested $350. They ship in March with 40-second antishock memory. The company also unveiled a Dolby Digital receiver priced at a suggested $399 and a DD/DTS receiver priced at a suggested $500. They're due in April and May, respectively.
