"NEWS" Alamos begins commercial production at Arequipa Alamos Minerals Ltd AAS Shares issued 14,878,030 Jan 13 close $0.37 Thu 14 Jan 99 News Release Mr. Francis O'Kelly reports The company has commenced the first stage of commercial exploitation of its 100 per cent owned Arequipa M property near Ruaraz in the Ancash district of Peru. The mine and surrounding concessions host a series of northwest-southeast mesothemal veins. The principal Arequipa vein consists of two discrete assemblages: (1) a polymetallic vein containing silver, zinc, lead, copper and minor values of gold and (2) an arsenopyiite vein containing significant precious metal values. A north-south vein (veta Mabel) branches from the Arequipa vein and is traced over 300 metres on surface and is observed in level 6 of the underground workings. Within close proximity, there is an east-west trending manto dipping at 20 degrees with thickness 80 centimetres to 2.0 metres. To the west of the concession there are observed twin veins (vetas oriental) trending northwest to southeast parallel to the Arequipa vein. The initial production is from the main polymetallic vein at level 14, the uppermost level of the mine. The ore type is primarily galena with a high content of silver. The in-situ grade reports 43.40 per cent Pb and 2,120 grams per tonne Ag. Specimen grade ore (more than 3,500 grams per tonne Ag) is being separated for direct shipment to an as yet undetermined smelter. The remaining high-grade ore is trucked 50 kilometres to the Mesapata mill south of Huaraz for concentration. The 200 tpd plant is leased from the University of Huaraz. The first milling campaign will commence at the end of January and arrangements have been made for the sale of the ore concentrates. Production at the mine is currently limited to 50 tonnes per day, which is the capacity of the overhead tramway for transportation of ore to level 6. The mine road connecting to this level is now fully operational and can accommodate trucks up to a capacity of 25 tons. Underground development is focused on the extension of drifts on level 7 and level 14 and internal connection of ore passes to the level 6. Completion by mid-year will facilitate a substantial expansion in mining capacity per day. The exploration drifts report mostly continuous arsenopyrite and polymetallic mineralization in contiguous vein systems. The 14th drift is currently at 105 metres and drift 7 at 197 metres. Both report sphalerite (zinc) and galena (lead) in the face with a vein width averaging 50 centimetres. Systematic sampling of the Arequipa vein was completed last November. The resource assessment focused on the section of the mine above level 6 to the uppermost exposure of the vein at the peak of the mountain. This represents 68 per cent of the potential resources above level 6 and 21 per cent of the total resources for the Arequipa vein. The Mabel vein and manto were not included in the measurement. The sampling results indicate an arsenopyrite resource of 200,000 tonnes grading 12 grams per tonne Au with an average vein width of 0.82 of a metre. A total of 70,000 tonnes of the resource is classified in the proven/probable category. The calculated resources are higher in tonnage and lower in tenor than previously reported, but resulting in approximately the same metal content. MDI laboratory of Denver, Colorado has tested the differential flotation of copper and arsenopyrites, resulting in the production of a high-grade Cu/Au/Ag concentrate and an arsenopyrite/pyrite concentrate amenable to cyanide leaching. The preliminary testwork produced a copper concentrate assaying 22.8 per cent Cu, 1,075 grams per tonne Au and 2,480 grams per tonne Ag. (c) Copyright 1999 Canjex Publishing Ltd. canada-stockwatch.com
