Why can't they just have their supplier ship direct to me?

Tonyt,

The supplier is geered for large single orders not a few items at a time. This is the problem being faced.

Glenn

Dell is a good model for inventory control. Dell integrates its suppliers into its business systems so the suppliers know what the demand is at all times and can deliver supplies as they are needed. Dell maintains very little inventory--none in some items. Monitors get shipped directly to the customer without ever going to a Dell factory and is coordinated to arrive on the same truck as the PC. I think the key to success in the on-line book business will be efficient integration of publishers and delivery companies into Amazon.com's business systems.
