<<< Will there actually be no true broadband revolution? >>>

Per C. Michael Armstrong:

"By merging with TCI, we plan to create an advanced broadband network that can deliver an array of communications, entertainment and information services directly to millions of U.S. households," C. Michael Armstrong, AT&T's chairman, said in a letter to shareholders. "We consider this a critical step toward our goal of becoming the "total communications source' for our customers - supplying complete packages of local telephone, long-distance, wireless, Internet, entertainment and next-generation digital services.""

Above from the NY Times Jan. 9, 1999 Pg. C1 by Seth Schiesel.

Powerful statements from a communication "Czar". If this direction becomes a national priority, for business for defense and for the public good, then the capital the energy and the innovation will quickly be found. On a business basis alone I think a case could be made for comparing the information highway to the interstate highway system in terms of a national infrastructure issue. Ie., we will pay for it in taxes or tax concessions.

For the near to medium term though, it looks like Ampex may have a real good play in the emerging SAN market. The Ampex DST and the MicroNet raid/fibre optic product lines may be the ticket to increased revenues.

However, at the moment, while the web hosting service will provide valuable early adaptor experience, it's effect may be more stock market splash (while Internet mania prevails) than top and bottom line results.

Sorry about that misplaced decimal point in market value, it may have been a Freudian slip <g>.
