IDT Announces RC3041 Processor Available for Under $5; RISController Processor Now Industry's Lowest-Cost 32-bit RISC Microprocessor
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 11, 1999--IDT (Nasdaq:IDTI), a leading manufacturer of RISC microprocessors, today announced a 20 percent price reduction for the TQFP-packaged RC3041(TM) RISController(TM) microprocessor, making it the industry's first 32-bit RISC processor priced in volume at less than $5.
The RC3041 32-bit processor is targeted at cost-sensitive embedded processing applications such as cable modems and digital consumer equipment, and is currently used in products including EchoStar's DISH(TM) Network satellite digital receiver, Bay Networks' cable modems and Hughes' Direct PC(TM). "The maturity of the RC3041 device, in conjunction with its acceptance in the embedded marketplace and the company's ongoing cost-reduction activity, has enabled IDT to establish this new price point and further help designers obtain the benefits of RISC architecture," said Phil Bourekas, director of marketing and applications for IDT's microprocessor division. "IDT continues its role as a pioneer and innovator within the MIPS architecture for embedded systems. IDT's accomplishments include extensions to the instruction set, innovative system interfaces, micro architecture features, and more recently, breaking the 10 cents/MIPS barrier with the RC32364(TM) RISController processor."

RC3041 Multiple Features

The RC3041 is a general-purpose 32-bit microprocessor that combines the high performance of the popular MIPS-architecture RC3000(TM) CPU with optimized on-chip caches and a programmable bus interface for reduced system cost. At about one-third of a square inch, the small footprint of the TQFP package makes it ideal for space-conscious designs. Helping to minimize system cost, the RC3041 includes a multiply/divide unit, 2 KBytes of instruction cache, 512 Bytes of data cache, a programmable bus interface and programmable port width support. Complete software support is available, including compilers, real-time operating systems, monitors/debuggers, floating point emulation software and page description languages for low-cost, multifunction printer applications.

IDT's World-Class RISController Processors

The IDT RC3041 is an important member of IDT's widely used 32- and 64-bit RISController microprocessor family that implements the MIPS instruction set. Offering a wide range of software-compatible, price/performance choices, IDT has optimized the designs of its high-performance microprocessors for use in a range of embedded communications applications, including internetworking, multimedia, datacom and telecom products. Superior price/performance, innovative architecture, low-power consumption, small form factor and comprehensive tools support have made the IDT RISController series the standard for a number of digital consumer products for leading companies.

Pricing and Availability

The RC3041 in a 100-pin TQFP package is currently available in 20-, 25- and 33-MHz frequencies. Prices start at $4.90 in 100,000-piece quantities (OEM pricing, FOB USA). The RC3041 is available in both 3.3-volt and 5-volt versions.

We will push past resistance at 10, and it should keep floating up into 15 or 16 range. This is more gut feel than TA, but looking at the internet stock valuations as wel as other chip companies, this makes sense.

Also, this last week has been good to players in the embedded market. Check out ELON, INSGY, MWAR, etc.

Folks, don't forget that much of IDTI's success comes from embedded processors, like the new $5 chip they announced. These chips ship in huge volumes, i.e. for printers, routers, switched, etc. IDTI is still king in some of these niche (and growing) markets.

Good Luck Trading! This week should make a lot of very happy!
