Euro builds Internet economies

According to reports, some hotels in big European cities removed the booze from minibars over the New Year's weekend so the programmers slaving away at the euro conversion wouldn't be distracted. Apparently, the sober orgy of programming had the intended outcome: Banks made the conversions necessary to support the euro, and are now trading in the new currency.

An integrated European economy, of course, demands integrated and open communications. And yesterday saw a dramatic rise in European telecom stocks (Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, Telefónica de España, Vodafone Group, and Nokia, for example), compared to mixed (mostly down) results for U.S. telecoms.

A strong telecom infrastructure is a keystone of an Internet economy. (Of course, another building block is a regulatory and fiscal environment that encourages risk-taking.) So keep an eye on European telecom stocks. As they go, the
