Charliss, I am in general agreement with the points you make so eloquently.

I would take some exception to parts of the contention below, which I find too categorical:

First of all it may be impossible to isolate the "start of an endeavor," since most endeavors exist in a complex of continuing contexts and processes. For example, when dependence was declared from England, a general common good was articulated in the Declaration of Independence, even though many might consider that the start of the US.

But in a more specific sense and context, I can see your point.
