Compaq opens Singapore engineering
design centre

SINGAPORE, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Compaq Computer Corp
(NYSE:CPQ - news) unit CustomSystems Group opened a new
engineering design centre in Singapore on Monday.

The company said in a statement CustomSystems will design and build specially engineered hardware
systems for customers in the Asia Pacific region.

''This strategic new investment will specialise in areas such as smart card technologies, electronic
commerce and real time signalling processing applications,'' said Wong Heng Chew, managing director
of Compaq Singapore.

Rustom Kanga, vice president of Compaq CustomSystems, said the new design centre would begin
working on its first electronic commerce project with China's commodities exchange to design a
certificate authorisation system.

He said the system should make sure documents being sent also arrived at their destinations and came
back.

Kanga said CustomSystems, with engineering centres in France, Germany, the U.S., Japan and
Australia, generated US$1 billion worldwide and the Asia Pacific contributed some 15 percent of the
global business.
