IMO, Ascend was the last BIG player in the New World. Their Cascade aqcuisition was a huge impulse for them. Ascend is really one of the last broad-breadth competitors to Cisco which has a chance to compete in the new world. COMS is far too low-end to even consider competition in New World architecture - I think thoughts of them and Intel merging were more likely than a merger with one of the "Big Boys".

I see XYLN as more of a play than COMS. They have products extending into the higher layer competition, BUT they aren't positioned to effectivitely participate in the New World arena (voice, data, video integration). The mere mention of the relevance of this type of convergence and its relation to the end user sent Broadcast.com's stock soaring - folks are beginning to realize the importance of this.

IMO, MOT's voice-enabled router division is the next target. The problem to investors is that this division is buried within MOT.
