if you think ATHM was the reason you couldn't get into SI then you don't deserve to have a cable modem.

what other sites do you visit that have had similar problems on ATHM but not through your dial-up ISP???

Oh yea, and what technology DOES speed up a busy site????

How is @HOME doing compared to other providers? check this out

internetweather.com

They will do the "pings" every 15 min, to determine packet loss. of course this is based on thier connection.. but still an interesting comparison.

|>The people from ATHM that installed my cable modem were just not on top of
|>things. The first set of people had no luck getting their drivers working. The
|>second set of people who came out the next day finally did after 5 more hours.

I absolutely agree w/ your assessment on this. Even their so called
senior support people understood very little about networking.
And they also lack of good operation management in their tech
support, they simply can't track what's going on for my problem,
such that whenever I called them to check the status of my
problem, they asked me to start from power-cycle of my cable
modem. My problem wasn't solved for over 10 days. So you could
imagine that I could go on and on about the frustrating stories.

|>I have had service for 2 months. Again, I admit that downloads are much faster
|>but where the cable modem does NOT help is in logging onto a site faster or
|>speeding things up when there is traffic. I had several days last week where SI
|>waits were interminable...I had to switch over to my ISP and dial up, which I still
|>keep as backup.

That's the different feeling than I have had. I really have
not had any bad feeling about the performance in any occasion.
I know about a dozen of people here who got ATHM. Everyone
is extremely positive and exciting about the performance/speed.

Of course, I have learnt my frustration about poor performance.
But those terrible memory came from AOL services I had.
AOL gave me terrible feeling about their network
performance, as it almost drops my connection EVERYTIME
when I dial-in to their network, not to mention the EXTREME
slowness all the time.
