Hi Kerm,

Were you looking for something like a web location which would allow you to put together some webpages at no cost? I've used Geocities as a place to build websites to share things with people on SI. It's free as long as you aren't selling something and don't put any ads on it (however, they put banner-type ads or pop-up ads at the top...nothing too overpowering...but that is the price you pay for getting a free website).

To begin, you have to choose a "neighborhood" to be in at Geocities. Most people on SI who build a page to share stock market information use WallStreet. You can build pages with any normal graphics, etc...and can load .jpegs and .gifs very easily. In fact, their FTP (file transfer protocol) system called FILE MANAGER is one of the easiest to use when loading HTML or graphics files. The only person(s) who can access a site to change data are those who have the member's "name" and "password" to open the FILE MANAGER. BTW, they have plenty of different HTML-writing programs, etc... for those who don't know how to build an HTML page from scratch and load it into a server.

That's about it. It's free to use (so far). If you want to have ads on the page, you can do that, but you have to pay a commercial rate which is still quite cheap. The server is reasonably reliable most of the time, but tends to be quite slow on Saturdays. If I'm going to work on a page, I tend to do my FTPs late at night or early in the morning because it's faster than during the day. BTW, when you "join", you DO have to fill out a questionnaire, but I always only offer very minimal information. If you check off the bullet saying that you don't want to get news, junk email, etc... it seems to work. I've only been placed on one ad e-mail list that I checked off because I wanted to receive it. I've never been flooded with junk mail. A few months ago, there were some news stories about Geocities possibly not protecting members' privacy and there was some kind of government investigation about this. In any case, since then they have come out with some privacy policies which are outlined at the website when you join. I believe that they address all of the concerns that people might have.

Anyhow, here is their URL for you or anyone else who is interested. If anyone wants to know more about how to join, etc... check out this website. If you can't find your way around on it, let me know. It's actually very easy to use once you get started and learn to use their File Manager.

Croc

Hi Kerm,

I was just thinking about your question about portfolio generating, etc...

You might have a look at the ClearStation website. I know a couple of people who use that site. It's free to belong, and you can share your portfolio with other people there. It's got fairly sophisticated "tools" available for those who like TA. Some people use it for paper trades, etc... You can also add comments that other people can read, etc... The people that I know who use it really like it a lot. I haven't gotten around to actively using it yet, but I probably will. It's possible that this website could do all of the things that you are hoping to do as far as sharing information with others.

Anyhow, here's their website if you want to have a look around.

Try this Canadian site. It's free and easy to use.

canoe.quote.com

If the link screws up, goto canoe.com (or search for canoe - Canadian on-line explorer). It's a general purpose Cdn news site with some financial info also.
