RAID in the fibre channel SAN is the Market direction where Mylex shows leadership. Microsoft has done a poor job, at best in implementing RAID in software. Infact, many a vendor has gone broke in implementing software only RAID.

For ow end workstations and servers, you still need an embedded DSP (thats Digital
Signal Processor i.e. Strongarm or i960 or PowerPC) or "hardware
solution".

A DSP is mandatory. There are several drive management function going on with RAID which you should not
burden the main processor with; if you don't have a hardware solution, you can measurably slow down a server or workstation. Its
also much cheaper to use a DSP than to add additional Pentium II
chips.

The net result, for the low end you have a RAID solution with is:
1) manageable
2) high performance
3) fault tolerant
4) highly available

IT managers are willing to pay hundreds of $$$ for this capability, much
more than Adaptec's low end RAID solutions.
