Thumper, Excellent observation. MM's have to bring the bid/ask down at least a couple of times per day when volume is high like this. Often times in a buying surge, they will continue to fill the buy orders even if they have no shares in inventory. Then after they get to a point that they are short shares and are no longer comfortable selling they start walking the bid /ask down to scare out the weak hands and those satisfied with their current gains.
